Since the 1st movie of Marvel’s Avengers hit the theatres. It has made a lot of noise and broken various records. However, Marvel’s newest project is set to break a record even before its release. Avengers: Doomsday is Marvel’s most ambitious project so far. After the roaring success of Infinity War and Endgame, the Russo Brothers have definitely taken up a monstrous challenge. With a staggering $1 billion budget, of which at least 25% is allocated to its all-star cast alone. Marvel Studios is going all out to make the world’s most expensive film.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to have more than 35 A-lister playing small or big roles. This ensemble cast alone costs Marvel more than $250 million as per reports by Variety. Major chunk of the budget will be going into the VFX of the movie. Marvel and Disney are known for realistic VFX and mesmerising visuals. They will make sure the VFX for this movie are top-notch.
According to reports by Collider, Marvel has already spent $8 million on pre-production alone. This is more than three times the amount spent on Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Which ultimately cost them $388 million. Moreover, according to Forbes, Doomsday‘s weekly production costs are double that of Quantumania. As a result, analysts estimate that the movie might cost Marvel Studios anywhere from $500 to $600 million.
The cost of Doomsday would be far more than that of Star Wars: Episode IX, which now holds the record for the most expensive production at $447 million. But this is only the cost of production.
Marvel has always been big on marketing their movies worldwide and their plans for Avengers: Doomsday aren’t any different. Marvel is anticipated to spend millions more on global publicity and marketing. According to industry estimates, Disney and Marvel may have to pay up to $1 billion for Avengers: Doomsday.
A Hit Or A Miss?
Doomsday must be a huge box office hit in order to turn a profit. Even if it does reach the $1 billion landing cost as anticipated. The movie would need to make significantly more than $1 billion to break even after deducting the cost of distribution. This implies that Doomsday might not be a box office success. Even if it makes more money than popular films like Jurassic Park ($912 million). The Lord of the Rings trilogy (which had an average total of $987 million).
One of the reasons fans will definitely flock to the theatres is the return of their beloved Robert Downey Jr playing Dr. Doom. According to early concept art leaks and rumours, Doomsday will combine several timelines, and it is said that iconic characters like Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine would appear. Avengers: Doomsday will be “the culmination of everything we’ve built over the last 20 years. According to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, suggesting a narrative scale much larger than the Infinity Saga.
According to early box office projections, Doomsday might likely surpass $1 billion in the first 10 days of release. Whether it can match or surpass Endgame’s $2.79 billion total haul remains to be seen, but industry experts are optimistic. The film’s planned release date comes after a two-year MCU content reset intended to increase audience anticipation and bring the franchise’s quality back under control.
