Poker is a game of skill and strategy with many terms. It can be intimidating for beginners to grasp these terms. Knowing some of the most common terms can enhance your understanding of the game. Here are some of the most common terms. 

Basic terms in poker

Whether you play at a land-based casino or do online gambling, you will frequently come across the following terms when playing poker:

Action: Action refers to acting in a poker game. Players may call, bet, check, raise, or fold. 

Ante: A small bet all players must make before a hand is dealt.

Pot: The total amount of chips or money in the center of the table the victor will win. The pot odds help players to decide if a call is profitable. It refers to the ratio of the current size of the pot to the cost of a call. 

Blind: Forced bets placed by the two players to the left of the dealer before the start of each hand in games like Texas Hold’em. The small blind is the smaller of the two forced bets. The big blind is the larger of the two forced bets.

Basic betting terms

It is easy to become nostalgic about the origins of poker with its rich history. In the modern era, the advantage of online gaming is that it offers convenience and accessibility, which helps make poker a more popular game than ever. Here are some of the basic betting terms in poker:

Call: You match the highest bid made by another player.

Check: You choose to pass your turn to bet and not to wager your chips.

Raise: You increase the current bet made by another player. All subsequent players must match this higher bet to continue in the hand.

Fold: You forfeit your hand and chips. You do this to remove yourself from a hand when you feel your hand is too weak to compete.

Check-Raise: You initially check the raise after an opponent bets. It’s a way to get opponents to commit more chips to the pot.

All-in: You place all your remaining chips in the pot.

Bluff: You make a bet or raise when you have a weak hand to deceive your opponents into folding stronger hands.

Basic terms in dealing

In poker’s history, the dealer would deal the cards. In live dealer games today, dealers still deal cards, and the action is live streamed to the online player.

Button: This marks the position of the dealer.

Community Cards: In games like Texas Hold’em, the community cards are the face-up cards in the center of the table that all players share.

Flop: This consists of the first three community cards dealt face-up.

Turn: The fourth community card dealt in Texas Hold’em.

River: The fifth and final community card dealt in Texas Hold’em.

Hole Cards: The two cards dealt to each player in games like Texas Hold’em that stay hidden from other players.

Brick: A community card that doesn’t improve anyone’s hand.

Basic terms in hands

A pair in poker is two matching cards. A two pair is two matching sets of cards in a hand, such as two kings. Trips are three cards in different suits that have the same face value.

If you have a straight you have five cards in sequence. A flush is five cards not in sequence of the same suit.

There are a few other basic terms in hands and a vast number that refer to player behavior. You will start to pick up these terms as you become a more experienced player.
